About Calycanthus occidentalis (Spice Bush)

This fragrant deciduous shrub is called Calycanthus occidentalis. With a rounded growth habit this variety reaches an average mature landscape size of 3-12′ tall by 3-12′ wide. Grown as a shrub or multi-trunk tree, 4-6 inch long ovate shaped, green leaves fill the tree. During the spring and summer seasons, striking magenta-red flowers with strap-like petals emerge resembling a shape much like the lotus flower. Just as the common name Spice Bush implies, the leaves when crushed emit a spicy camphor-like fragrance. Its flowers in contrast smell more fruity than spicy. The end of the blooming season gives way to brown urn-shaped capsules that remain until its foliages sheds in the winter.

Origins And Landscape Adaptability

Native to Northern California and commonly found throughout the Sierra Nevada foothills. Calycanthus occidentalis is also found as far north as Southern Oregon. Often used as a refuge for local pollinators, its dense branching also offers nesting sites for small birds and animals. It is an excellent deer deterrent as its seeds contain a toxin that large animals avoid eating. Generally disease and pest free, this variety is commonly known by the following names, Spice Shrub, Western Spicebush, California Allspice, and Western Sweershrub.

Care And Planting Instructions

Plant Calycanthus occidentalis in an area that receives full sun to partial shade exposure using well-draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location. Thriving best in moist soils, this variety can tolerate dry spells but not prolonged drought-like conditions. While regular pruning isn’t necessary, light pruning for desired shape or to promote new growth can be done as needed.

Landscape Design Ideas

An obvious choice for native plant gardens, Spice bush is also an excellent addition to rock style gardens planted near a pond. Plant near other water loving varieties in a shady corner.
