About Crassula Ovata (Jade Plant)

This rounded, evergreen shrub is known as Crassula Ovata. Commonly known as Jade Plant and native to Southern Africa, this succulent reaches an average mature landscape size of 2-5′ wide by 2-6′ tall. Its waxy, green leaves are thick in size and oval in shape just as its name describes, crassula, meaning thick and ovata meaning egg shaped. Its foliage grows on thick brown stems with clusters of whitish-pink, star shaped flowers. Its flowers emerge during the fall and winter during periods of cool weather conditions and longer stretches of darkness. In addition, its flowers invite local pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Planting And Care Instructions

Jade plant is a low maintenance succulent requiring at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. It can tolerate indirect sun exposure but if its leaves begin to droop, it may need more light. Plant this variety using a well draining soil and water when the soil has completely dried out. This variety does not tolerate soggy soils or frost but can survive under occasional neglect. If leaves begin to drop, reduce watering frequency. Cuttings can be propagated and grow best during the summer season.
