Commonly known as California Fuchsia, this variety is native to California and a prolific bloomer with a flowering period lasting from August through October. Sitting atop long, slender stems, its foliage is white-green in an ovate shape that are evenly arranged from the base to the the top of the stem. Its average mature landscape size reaches 1-3′ tall by 2-3′ wide and grows a fast rate. Its late blooming season make this variety a valuable nectar source for local hummingbirds. Other important qualities about this variety are that it is drought tolerant and a deer deterrent, withstanding dry California summers as well as windy coastal environments. Planting And Care Instructions
Plant Epilobium canum in full sun to partial shade using fast or slow draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well in its new location, then reduce frequency. Once established, this variety is drought tolerant and will withstand long periods without irrigating. However, irrigating during dry periods has been known to elongate its blooming period. To encourage new growth for an upcoming growing season, prune back the plant in early winter.
Landscape Design Ideas
As a California Native plant, California Fuchsia can be used in any landscape design. Plant on a sunny hillside for erosion control or among other California native plants like Carex tumulicola or Salvia microphylla ‘Mesa Azure’ for a natural landscape design.
