About Erigeron x Moerheimii (Pink Santa Barbara Daisy)

This profuse daisy-like bloomer is called Erigeron X Moerheimii. With blooms that blanket its foliage from early summer to early autumn, this variety blooms again and again with a strong re-bloom if spent flowers are pruned regularly. With an upright growth habit, its flowers typically reach 1.25-2” wide in pink and purple colors with orange undertones and yellow centres.  Accompanied by fine, grey-green lanceolate to narrowly spatulate leaves, this variety reaches an average mature landscape size of 8-12” wide by 12-18” tall. Perennial in milder climates like in Northern California.

Origins And Planting Instructions

Originally introduced in the Netherlands in the early 20th century, Erigeron x Moerheimii is a cross between Erigeron speciosus and Erigeron aurantiacus. An excellent pollinator for bees, butterflies and hoverflies. Hardy to temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit, this variety can also tolerate light shade and occasional watering.

Planting And Care Instructions

Plant Erigeron X Moerheimii in an area that receives full sun to partial shade and plant using well draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location, then reduce frequency. Cut back spent blooms to encourage a boost of re flowering.

Landscape Design Ideas

Pink Santa Barbara Daisy in its dense, compact form makes an excellent border or even on hillsides for erosion control. Its tolerance to partial shade helps fill up otherwise bare areas when used as a ground cover between taller perennials.
