About Limonium perezii (Sea Lavender)

Limonium perezii is a hardy perennial prized for its traits as well as its look. Dark green leaves grow in dense rosettes close to the ground reaching an average mature landscape size of 2-4 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide.  Leafless stalks grow out above its foliage reaching 1-3 feet high. Growing at the top of each stalk are tiny, tubular flowers with papery, violet calyces and small white corollas grown in dense clusters of large, airy panicles. With a growing season lasting throughout both the summer and falls seasons, its calyces are known to last well after its corollas fall off making them great for dried flower arrangements.

Origin And Landscape Adaptability

Limonium perezii is native to the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands and is commonly known as both Sea Lavender and Statice. Hardy to temperatures as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit this variety also tolerates salt spray and drought-like conditions.

Care & Planting Instructions

Plant Limonium perezii in an area that receives full sun exposure for at least six hours per day using well draining soil. Without enough direct sun, this variety can become leggy and lackluster. Water regularly after planting to help it establish to its new location, then reduce frequency watering only occasionally during the summer months. Cut back spent blooms for a cleaned up look and split the plant every two to three years in early spring to give it new life.

Landscape Design Ideas

Sea Lavender is an excellent choice for coastal and xeriscape landscape designs due to its durability and low water requirements. While its structural presence adds architectural interest to any garden, it is particularly great for those seeking to invite local pollinators like bees and butterflies.
