About Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’ (New Zealand Flax)
This highly unusual colored plant is called Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’. With arching, strap-like, glossy foliage ranging in colors from chocolate brown to burgundy, this evergreen cultivar of New Zealand Flax is a striking contrast against a landscape’s typical range of colors. With a clumping habit and upright growing leaves, this variety reaches an average mature landscape size of 3-4′ tall by 2-3′ spread. During the summer months leafless stalks emerge with red tubular flowers. More profuse flowering occurs in more established plants while under certain conditions, flowers can give way to twisted seed capsules.
Origins And Landscape Adaptability
Just as its common name implies, New Zealand Flax, this variety originates from New Zealand. This Flax variety has excellent adaptability to coastal conditions and windy environments. In some cases it has shown to be a deterrent for wildlife such as rabbits or deer. Once established, it tolerates drought conditions and has shown to be resistant to common plant pests and diseases.
Care And Planting Instructions
Plant Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’ in an area that receives full sun to partial shade using well-draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location. After the first few growing seasons, this plant is tolerant to drought conditions. For a cleaned up appearance cut back dead leaves and if desired, divide plants during the spring season.
Landscape Design Ideas
