About Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ (New Zealand Flax ‘Yellow Wave’)
Prized for its foliage, this upright growing shrub is called Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’. Its sword-like foliage is yellow with lime green margins that grow upwards and eventually arch at the ends as the plant grows. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 3-4′ tall with a 4-5′ spread, its leaves can grow as wide as 1-3″. During the spring, tall spikes with tubular red flowers emerge but typically only in mature plants. This variety is part of the New Zealand Flax cultivar and known commonly as New Zealand Flax ‘ Yellow Wave’.
Origins And Landscape Adaptability
Native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island, New Zealand Flax has been traditionally used in Māori culture. It is cultivated for its wide sturdy leaves that have been used in weaving and rope making. Hardy to temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit, this variety is drought tolerant, salt spray tolerant, and known to deter both deer and rabbits. While generally disease free, it can be susceptible to mealybugs.
Care And Planting Instructions
Plant Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ in an area that receives full sun to partial shade exposure using well draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish quickly to its new location, then reduce frequency. Drought tolerant once established, this variety is generally considered low maintenance. Cut back spent foliage for a cleaned up appearance and divide in the spring if desired.
Landscape Design Ideas
Thriving in Northern California climates, Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ offers a contemporary look and can be used from seaside landscapes to urban gardens. Planted in containers or in the ground, this variety can be an excellent filler for sunny corners or alongside pathways.
