About Pinus mugo ‘Mughus’ (Dwarf Mugo Pine)

An attractive conifer, Pinus mugo ‘Mughus’ is the compact form of the Pinus Mugo. Easily shaped when pruned, this variety can reach an average mature landscape size of 3-5′ tall by 6.5-10′ wide if left untouched. While it grows at a slow rate of 1-8″ per year, it remains popular for its attractiveness year round and durability, characteristics that can make a landscape design both functional and practical. Its foliage is dark green in color with stiff 1-2″needle shaped leaves that emerge in pairs that helps fill out its branches. the Pinus does not produce flowers but instead produces male and female cones. With males producing small, yellow-brown cones in the late spring and females producing reddish-purple cones in the spring. 

Origins And Landscape Adaptability

Pinus mugo ‘Mughus’ originates from Central and Southern Europe and was introduced into the United States in the 1800’s. Highly adaptable to high-altitude regions, this variety is a great wind break for coastal landscapes, harsh urban environments and frost areas that can sometimes occur in Northern California.

Planting And Care Instructions

Plant Pinus mugo ‘Mughus’ in an area that receives full sun to partial shade exposure using a well draining soil. While tolerant against poor soils and neglect, water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location, then reduce frequency. Drought tolerant once established.

Dwarf Mugo Pine can be planted in containers only while young  and can be used to frame a walkway or entryway. They can be used as an interesting border and fit nicely into rocky style grandees or alpine gardens.
