Prized for its interesting foliage, Thuja ‘Green Giant’ is as attractive as it is versatile. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 50-60 feet tall by a 12-20 foot spread, this specimen grows quickly reaching 20 feet tall within its first decade. The tree forms a uniform, conical habit with flat, deep-green sprays of foliage that resemble layered, splayed fans. Its texture is notably dense yet feathery, offering a refined appearance that sets it apart from other coniferous shrubs and trees with similar form.
Origins And Landscape Adaptability
Introduced into the United States in the 1970-1980s, Green Giant originates from Denmark and is actually a hybrid of Thuja standishii and Thuja plicata. Its continued popularity is due to how quickly it grows, its resistance to diseases and hardiness to temperatures as low as -25 degrees and as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. After one to two years, this variety has also been shown to tolerate mild drought conditions.
