About Aesculus californica (California Buckeye)

This multi-trunk tree is called Aesculus californica. Commonly known as California Buckeye, this tree is the only Buckeye variety native to the state of California. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 12-24′ tall x 40′ wide, its multi-trunk base supports its wide breadth making some refer to is as either a small tree or large bush. While one of the first deciduous trees to lose its leaves in early winter, its one of the first in early spring to welcome dark green foliage followed by white flower spikes soon thereafter. Its flower spikes reach out above its foliage, a striking contrast against its dark green foliage. In the late summer round, shiny fruit appear then drop as the fall season is underway. Attracting an array of butterflies throughout the year, this tree is both drought tolerant and deer deterrent.

Other common names known by include California Horse-chestnut.

Care And Planting Instructions

Plant California Buckeye in an area that receives full sun to part shade exposure using well draining soil.  Water regularly after planting to help it establish quickly then reduce frequency. This plant tolerates drought conditions and is cold hardy to temperatures as low as -5 degrees Fahrenheit.
