This herbaceous perennial is called Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’. A dense growing ground cover with dark green leaves and bronze highlights that spreads out to an average mature landscape size of 3-6″ tall by 12-24″ width. In the spring, purple-blue flower spikes grow reaching 8-10″ tall and lasting into the winter season. Each of its flower spikes consist of multiple small two lipped petals that spiral around its branches in whorls. Inviting to both bees and butterflies, its nectar-rich blooms are a local pollinator’s paradise. Not your average groundcover, Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’ adds further curiosity in full bloom when its colorful blooms almost look iridescent against its foliage.
Origins And Landscape Design
Ajuga reptans is native to parts of Europe while the cultivar ‘Caitlin’s Giant’ was introduced in the United Kingdom before gaining popularity in the United States. Considered to be a low maintenance plant, Catlin’s Giant Ajuga is highly adaptable and can tolerate mild drought like conditions once established. Often commonly called Bugleweed or Catlin’s Giant Ajuga this variety is also effective at deterring wild rabbit and deer.
Care And Planting Instructions
Plant Catlin’s Giant Ajuga in an area that receives full sun exposure in coastal climates or in partial shade for hotter inland areas. Using well-draining soil, leave at least 1.5 feet between plantings to allow for this groundcover to reach its mature landscape size. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location for at least one to two growing seasons. Reduce frequency once established watering to maintain even soil moisture without overwatering. A general fertilizer can be used in the spring to encourage growth.
