About Arbutus ‘Marina’

This popular evergreen tree is called Arbutus ‘Marina’. Commonly known as Marina Strawberry Tree, this variety comes in both standard and multi trunk forms. Just as the name describes, the Marina Strawberry Tree is filled by deep green leaves boasting showy hanging pink flowers and strawberry-like fruit. While the fruit is edible, it’s not palatable.  This tree blooms year-round with peak blooming seasons during the Spring and late Fall.  As a moderate grower,  you can expect its full size to reach 40-50 feet high by 25-40 feet wide at maturity. Its growth causes older bark to peel away from the trunk and branches revealing new shiny red bark below.

Planting Ideas

The Arbutus ‘Marina’ grows best in full sun. Plant in well-drained soil with enough space as it is a large tree when it reaches maturity. With growth and blooms year-round, note that peeling bark, flower and fruit droppings can be expected. This tree works well planted in patios, street medians, or as an ornamental tree for the front of a yard.

Care Instructions

Known to be drought tolerant, the Arbutus ‘Marina’ tree requires deep watering until the root system is established. After established, it tolerates minimal watering but needs more occasional watering during hotter months. Its growth habit is rounded and will require annual winter pruning to maintain its shape.
