This intriguing ornamental tree is called Cornus Kousa Galilean. Commonly known as Galilean Kousa Dogwood, this tree’s foliage is green with waved margins that turn shades of orange and yellow during the fall season. Its flowers are the most striking part about this ornamental tree. During the spring and summer seasons, its beautiful flowers blanket its’ foliage creating an elegant floral canopy. Its blooms can reach as large 3-5 inches wide and include four delicate ovate to pointed shaped creamy-white petals that meet at small, inconspicuous central florets. In late summer, raspberry-like fruit begins to emerge roughly 1-2 inches in diameter and have a sweet tasting flavor. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 25′ tall by 20′ wide, this specimen grows in a dense vase-like shape.
Origins And Adaptability
Native to the northeastern parts of Asia, this specimen was first introduced into the United States in the late 19th century due to its better resistance to diseases and blooming season. Winter hardy to temperatures as low as 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit, tolerating seasonal frost.
Care And Planting Instructions
Plant Galilean Kousa Dogwood in an area that receives full to partial sun exposure using well draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location and continue to water regularly especially during periods of extreme heat. Inland areas where there are higher temperatures, using mulch in the summer can help retain some moisture or planting it in an area with afternoon shade can be beneficial. If pruning for a desired shape or size, cut back branches in the later winter or early spring.
