About Dianella Tasmanica ‘Tas Red’ ™ PP 18737 (Tasmanian Flax Lily)
This grass-like perennial is known as Dianella Tasmanica ‘Tas Red’. Boasting long narrow, sword-shaped leaves with slightly serrated edges, its foliage bears a deep green color with a deep red base. During the spring, clusters of blue flowers with maroon anthers emerge followed by shiny blue fruit in an oblong shape during the mid-summer season. Its fruit while inviting in color, are poisonous and should not be ingested. While considered a slightly invasive species, if desired, this variety can easily fill a planter bed due to its horizontal growing root system. Growing with an upright growth habit, this plant reaches an average mature landscape size of 1-2′ wide by 2-3′ tall.
Care And Planting Instructions
Plant Tasmanian Flax Lily in an area that receives partial shade to partial sun exposure. Water regularly after planting to help it establish quickly to its new location, then reduce frequency to moderate watering. Cut back older leaves for a cleaned up appearance and trim back the plant every few years to encourage healthy regrowth. A general fertilizer can be used if needed.
Landscape Design Ideas
Tasmanian Flax Lily can be planted along shady borders framing a property or fence line. Plant them in multiples to fill out a large space or planter bed. For commercial landscapes consider planting them under a shade tree or shaded corners of a parking lot.
