About Echium fastuosum (Pride of Madeira)
This interesting evergreen shrub is called Echium fastuosum. Commonly known as Pride of Madeira, this plant is prized for its beautiful flower stalks. Climbing above its green-grey foliage, its upright flower stalks are filled with dozens of tiny flowers that bloom from the spring through summer seasons. Attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies, this variety also tolerates coastal winds and winter hardy to temperatures as low as 25-30 degrees Fahrenheit. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 4-6′ wide by 4-6′ tall, this variety grows quickly and spreads out well to fill large areas.
Care and planting instructions
Plant Pride of Madeira in an area that received full sun exposure at least 6 hours per day. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well to its new location then reduce frequency. Tolerates short drought periods. In the fall remove spent flower stalks for a cleaned up appearance and to encourage robust growth for the following bloom period.
Landscape design ideas
Pride of Madeira is well suited for coastal or seaside gardens. Its large growth and spread makes it optimal for filling large full sunny areas and adapts well to hillside plantings offering a wave of interesting color and textures.
