About Escallonia ‘Fradesii’ (Pink Escallonia)

This large shrub is known as Escallonia ‘Fradesii’. Commonly known as Pink Escallonia, this evergreen shrub grows serrated green, glossy leaves atop upright red stems. Throughout the entire year, dark pink flowers emerge with heavier blooming periods occurring in the spring and summer seasons. As a moderate grower, this plant reaches an average mature landscape size of 4-6′ tall by 4-5′ wide.

Care and planting instructions

Plant Pink Escallonia in an area that receives full sun to part shade using well draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help establish a strong root system, then reduce frequency. Hardy to temperatures as low as 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit, this variety also tolerates seaside conditions. If desired, prune back growth for desired shape or size or if its branches become leggy and unattractive. A general fertilizer can be used in the spring to encourage new growth and a robust blooming season.

Landscape design ideas

Escallonia ‘Fradesii’ looks nice when planted as a medium height privacy hedge alongside a fence or to separate areas of a residential landscape. It looks equally as nice when planted in multiples on street medians.
