About Macfadyena unguis-cati (Cat’s Claw)

This self-clinging vine is called Macfadyena unguis-cati. Commonly called Cat’s Claw, this fast growing vine is prized for its vigorous show of flowers throughout the spring season. The flowers are a big attractor to hummingbirds that visit regularly to feast on their nectar. As a semi-evergreen plant, this vine loses its leaves for a short period during the winter months. The mature size of this vine can reach 20-25′ feet long.

This plant is also known under a second botanical name, Dolichandra unguis-cati.

Care and planting instructions

Plant Cat’s Claw in an area that receives full sunlight but is sheltered from excessive wind. Using a well-draining soil, water regularly after planting to establish its root system before reducing frequency. Prune if desired to contain size before new growth in the spring.

Landscape design ideas

With self-clinging suction cups that are gentle on masonry, this quick-spreading vine can easily dress up an unsightly wall or frame a doorway or window. Macfadyena unguis-cati is a low maintenance, heat loving plant making it a great choice for California landscapes.
