About Magnolia ‘Sunsation’ (Sunsation Magnolia)

Magnolia ‘Sunsation’ is a sensation indeed. Each spring a stunning display of flowers occurs when 7 inch wide, creamy-yellow tulip-like flowers emerge brushed with highlights of pink and gold that blanket its branches. After the flowers fade, broad, ovate green leaves fill out the tree, adding lush texture through the summer months. This magnolia grows upright in a graceful pyramidal form, reaching an average mature size of 20–30 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide. Commonly known as the Sunsation Magnolia, it earns its name from its radiant, sun-kissed blooms that seem to capture the glow of a setting sun.

Origins And Landscape Adaptability

Magnolias are believed to be one of the oldest flowering plants in the world. A cross between Magnolia ‘Elizabeth’ and Magnolia ‘Woodman’, this hybrid was introduced in the late 90’s in the state of North Carolina. While generally a low maintenance tree, this variety can be susceptible to frost when blooms emerge early and needs to be protected from windy sites.

Care And Planting Instructions

Plant Sunsation Magnolia in an area that receives full sun exposure using a well draining soil. Water regularly after planting to help it establish quickly to its new location then reduce frequency. After its first few growing seasons, water deeply when soil has completely dried out. Be careful not to overwater as root rot is common with overwatering. When planting make sure the tree is protected from exposed areas by offering a wind break. A general fertilizer can be used in the spring before new growth begins to encourage a robust growing season while pruning can be done as needed.

Landscape Design Ideas

As an upright growing tree, this variety is excellent for smaller gardens or as an interesting focal point.
