About Cistus purpureus (Purple Rockrose)

This compact perennial shrub is called Cistus purpureus. Its lineage comes from a cross between Cistus ladanifer and C. creticus, making it a Cistus x purpureus or Cistus purpureus hybrid. An easy care plant in all senses, this plant is tolerant to poor soil conditions, drought tolerant and even occasional neglect. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 4′ tall by 6′ wide with a rounded growth habit, this evergreen shrub blooms from late spring into summer. Its flowers are pink-purple in color with a single brown spot at the base of each petal with yellow stamens.

Planting and care instructions

Plant Purple Rockrose in an area that receives full sun exposure for at least 6 hours a day. During planting, use a well draining soil and water regularly to help it quickly establish, then reduce frequency. If desired, prune annually after its blooming season ends to clean up its appearance or prune back for size.

Purple Rockrose is an excellent choice for rock style gardens as well as landscapes that are looking for minimal care requirements. This variety is often used to plant in multiples or to use as an accent among other colorful perennial plants.
