
About Deschampsia cespitosa (Tufted Hair Grass)
As an ornamental grass, Deschampsia cespitosa features interesting grass-like foliage. One of the few ornamental grasses that grows well in partial shade, this variety is also popular for its look. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 2-3′ tall by 1-2′ wide, its tufted foliage blades grow with 1/5″. During its blooming season from July to September, its flower stems shoot out above the foliage with ends closely resembling delicate feather plumes. The flowers have been found in subtle shades of golds, purples, greens and silvers.
Care And Planting Instructions
Plant Tufted Hair Grass using well draining soil in an area that receives full sun to partial shade exposure. Water regularly after planting to help it establish well, then reduce frequency so that soil remains moist but not soggy. Cut back spent blooms for a cleaned up appearance and cut back flower stems to the soil after its blooming period has ended.
