About Gambelia speciosa  (Island Snapdragon)

This colorful perennial is known as Gambelia speciosa. Native to the Channel Island and Gualalupe Island, Mexico this variety is commonly known as Island Snapdragon. As a fast grower, this arching shrub reaches an average mature landscape size of 1-3′ tall by 10′ wide. Its glossy green foliage is accompanied by red, tubular flowers that bloom almost year round under the right conditions. In northern California you can expect it to bloom profusely during the spring season as well as off and on throughout the rest of the year. This variety is also known to regularly invite local wildlife and pollinators such as birds, butterflies and insects.

Care And Planting Instructions

A prolific flowerer when planted in full sun, this variety should be planted in partial shade when planted inland where warmer California climates are found. Water regularly after planting to help it establish quickly, then reduce frequency. As a low maintenance plant, irrigation should be as infrequent as 2-3 times per month. If required, cut back growth during the spring to clean up its shape or reduce its size.

Landscape Design Ideas

A rock garden favorite, Island Snapdragon can be planted on rocky slopes among other drought tolerant varieties such as Perovskia atriplicifolia or Aptenia Cordifolia. An ideal choice for coastal landscape designs or landscape designs seeking to invite local pollinators.
