About Liquidambar styraciflua (American Sweetgum)
This large, deciduous tree is known as Liquidambar styraciflua, or American Sweet Gum. The highlight of this tree is its star shaped leaves that on average grow as large as 5″ in length. Throughout the year its leaves first emerge green in the spring season before turning shades of yellow, orange and red during the fall season. It is also prized for its interesting bark, brown with ridged scales.
During the spring small yellow flowers begin to bloom followed by its notable fruit in the early fall. Winged 1-2′ rounded, spiked fruit known as gum balls fall throughout the winter season littering the area underneath the tree. Reaching an average landscape size of 60-70′ tall by 40-50′ width this variety grows at a medium to fast rate, growing as much as 2′ per year and grows in a pyramidal form. Its characteristics make this large growing tree a focal point wherever planted.

Plant American Sweetgum tree in an area that receives full sunlight using a well draining soil. Plant this tree in a large enough area for its roots to grow comfortably. Water regularly after planting to encourage quick establishment, then reduce frequency. Once established, this tree requires minimal attention and is drought and fire tolerant.
