About Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ – (Little Gem Dwarf Southern Magnolia)
This compact evergreen tree is most recognized for its two toned foliage and large white blooms. Known as Little Gem Dwarf Southern Magnolia or Little Gem Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’, this tree boasts glossy green leaves contrasted by rust brown undersides. In late spring large fragrant flowers emerge ranging between 3″-12″ in size with repeat blooming lasting through summer. The Magnolia’s flowers can be cut for vases but due to their delicate nature typically don’t last long. Its dwarf nature makes it smaller and more narrow than its full sized form reaching an average landscape size of 20-25′ by 10-15′. All the great features of its large form but in a more manageable size for smaller landscape areas.
Planting and care instructions
Plant this tree in nutrient rich soil in an area that receives full sunlight. Water regularly and deeply to establish a healthy root system for the first few growing seasons, then reduce frequency. Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ can tolerate periods of drought but its ideal growing conditions are in moist soil. This plant is a slow to moderate grower with a height growth of up to 12″ per year but you can expect flowers to emerge as soon as 2-3 years old.
