About Nandina domestica ‘Firepower’ (Firepower Heavenly Bamboo)
This multicolored landscape favorite is called Nandina domestica ‘Firepower’ or, more commonly, Firepower Heavenly Bamboo. As an evergreen mounding shrub, this Nandina is one of the most colorful with new foliage that emerges as green and with maturity welcomes red highlights. This variety also offers an array of yellow, orange, and red colors as fall approaches that last all through the winter season. Reaching an average mature landscape size of 2.5-3′ by 2.5-3′, this compact shrub is low maintenance requiring minimal care. While some blooming does occur, its flowers are considered inconspicuous compared to its bright eye-catching foliage.
Planting and care instructions
Plant Nandina domestica ‘Firepower’ in an area that receives full sun using an average, well-draining soil. Water regularly to establish a healthy root system, then reduce the frequency to once weekly unless during periods of extreme heat. This variety grows in a mounded form and generally doesn’t require any pruning unless a rounder shape or more compact in size is preferred. A general fertilizer can be used in the early spring to encourage new growth.
