About Podocarpus elongatus ‘monmal’ (Blue Ice Yellowwood)

This interesting evergreen shrub is known as Podocarpus elongatus ‘Monmal’, synonymously called ‘Green Frost’ Its upright pyramidal form features 2 inches long, blue-green leaves that with maturity change to a calming blue-gray color. Native to South Africa, this Podocarpus is commonly known as Blue Ice Yellowood  and reaches an average landscape size at full maturity of 15-25 feet tall and wide. While a slow grower, you can still expect this shrub to grow up to 12 inches per year. If left to grow in its natural form and size, this conifer variety becomes a great shade tree.

Care and planting instructions

Plant Blue Ice Yellowwood in an area that receives full to partial sun exposure using well-draining soil. Water regularly after planting to encourage the growth of a healthy root system, then reduce the frequency to weekly unless during periods of extreme heat. While pruning isn’t necessary, filtered shade can be achieved by pruning back its dense growth in the spring. This variety does not require clean-up from droppings as it is practically litter free but a general fertilizer can be used in the spring to promote growth.

As a very versatile tree, Podocarpus elongatus ‘Monmal can be planted near walkways, driveways or patios for a litter-free shaded walkway. This plant adds interest as an ornamental lawn tree or shrub or can be used as a privacy screen when planted along fence lines. This variety can also be planted in multiples to act as a windbreak.
