About Xylosma congestum ‘Compacta’ (Compact Shiny Xylosma)

This evergreen shrub is called Xylosma congestum ‘Compacta’ and commonly as, Compact Shiny Xylosma. Native to China this shrub is most notable for the shiny quality to its leaves which as new growth emerges as a bronzy-red that ages to light green. Its leaves take a serrate, ovate form that reach 1-2″ long and are sometimes joined in the fall by small green-yellow pincushion flowers. The ‘Compacta’ is a quick growing specimen that grows half the size of a Xylosma congestum reaching an average landscape size of 6-8′ by 6-8′ with an upright, rounded growth habit. Aside from the occasional pruning to control growth, this plant is very low maintenance and is tolerant of inland heat and medium-mild seaside conditions.

Care and Planting Instructions

Plant Xylosma congestum ‘Compacta’ in well-draining soil in an area that receives either shade or sun exposure. Water regularly when planted to establish a healthy root system then, reduce frequency. This bush doesn’t require regular waterings and is known to be drought tolerant.
