About Acer rubrum ‘Franksred’ (Red Sunset® Red Maple)

Acer rubrum ‘Franksred’ (Acer Rubrum ‘Red Sunset®’) is widely popular for its fall colored foliage. As a moderate grower, this tree starts in a cone-like shape then gradually fills out into a rounded form. Its average landscape size reaches 40-50′ by 30-35′ and boasts wide bright green maple leaves from Spring through Summer. In early fall its leaves turn from green to yellow to orange then finally, bright red. Acer rubrum ‘Franksred’ (Acer Rubrum ‘Red Sunset®’) is commonly called Red Sunset® Red Maple and is a deciduous tree losing its leaves when the cold weather in late Fall finally sticks. As spring rolls around again you can find clusters of little red flowers marking the start of another growing season.

Care Instructions

Plant the Red Sunset® Red Maple in full sun. While it grows best in full sun it does tolerate light shade. When planting, use slightly acidic well-drained soil and water deeply and regularly to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency to weekly. Before new growth emerges in the spring, use a general fertilizer. While pruning is not usually required you can prune for shape or to maintain a smaller size tree by pruning in the winter months.

Where to plant

This tree looks nice planted on streetscapes, medians and in any yard. For those looking for a tree that offers shade in the Summer and color change in the Fall, this plant looks great at the end of a driveway or anchored at the corner of a yard.
