About Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ (Black Mondo Grass)

This unusual grass-like perennial is called Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’. Commonly known as Black Mondo Grass or Lily Turf, this variety is filled with stemless, narrow black leaves that reach an average mature landscape size of 10″ tall by 1-2′ wide. During the summer long spikes topped with light purple flowers appear followed by black berries during the fall. While a slow grower, this interesting plant is evergreen providing year-round interest wherever planted.

Planting and care instructions

Plant Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ in an area that receives full sun to partial shade using a well draining soil. Water regularly after planting to establish its roots, then reduce frequency to once weekly except during periods of extreme heat. As an easy care plant, no pruning is necessary and is hardy to temperatures below freezing.
